Saisonniers Rejoice!
Working in the fields of Belgian farms at harvest time, seasonal workers would work up quite a thirst. But, with no potable water in the fields and the general contamination of water back in the day, farmers turned to their best alternative – beer. Saisons, or “farmhouse ales,” were brewed on the farms during the off-season for the saisonniers (seasonal workers) during harvest season.
The most popular Belgian Saisons are unquestionably those from Brasserie Dupont, in the town of Tourpes in the Hainaut province of Belgium, which is still a working farm. The farm has been in operation since 1759, with the original brewery established in 1844. It was acquired by Alfred Dupont in 1920. Alfred’s son, Louis, was planning to buy a farm in Canada, and Alfred convinced him to stay in Belgium by giving him the farm brewery. That year, Louis provided a new take on the farm’s basic Saison recipe, creating the beer that is now known as Saison Dupont. Today, Saison Dupont (6.5% ABV) is the international favorite – especially in the United States. Made with a legendary yeast (reputed to be “touched by God”), it is a clear, golden ale that is a perfectly balanced thirst-quencher. Saison Dupont Vieille Provision is a different and stronger version of Saison Dupont and is considered the most classic example of the eleven Saisons Dupont produces.

Enter Bruz Louie
Bruz Beers is proud to bring back one of our favorite Saisons – known simply as Louie, in honor of the man who developed the original Saison Dupont in 1920.
Louie is a bright golden color with a big, dense white head. Its perfumy aroma is grainy with fruity and spicy notes. On the palate, flavors of pale malt, apples, white peaches and a hint of citrus prevail. Its creamy mouthfeel, soft texture and crisp carbonation make it very drinkable and its 6.2% alcohol is smooth and well-hidden. Its long, delicate finish is bright and invites the next sip. Overall, Louie is a vibrant and refreshing beer that is especially food-friendly.
Louie is on tap now at both of our taprooms – in Midtown at 67th and Pecos, and Bruz Off Fax at Colfax and York. Come in and join us for a pint soon–no farm work required!
